“Kill them all, starting with the smallest child,” Devimon had said.
That one sentence, said so calmly and so firmly, which had frozen Yamato’s bones more than anything else in the Digital World, should have been all the warning Yamato needed.
Yamato had been stupid to let the group climb Mount Infinity and face him, and even more stupid to join them. He should have stayed behind, and kept Takeru with him, and kept him safe. But the moment the idea that maybe if they defeated Devimon had been mentioned, there had been no turning back, and even if there had been - …
Well, Yamato could never be the kind of person to let them go into danger without him, and now six out of seven Digimon were flat on the ground, unable to move, with the only one left being Patamon. Patamon, who can’t even evolve, whose most powerful attack involves breathing really hard at things.
Yamato tries to drag himself along the ground to Takeru, as pain shoots up his arms and legs, while Devimon’s giant, clawed hand reaches down.
Patamon swings in front of it, and Devimon’s hand closes tight, crushing the life out of the tiny Digimon. Yamato tries to will himself, or Garurumon, or anyone to move and do something, but nobody does. Nobody’s able to. Six Digimon versus one and they were totally outclassed.
Devimon’s hand tightens and tightens around Patamon, and then Yamato hears a familiar sound, and light explodes between Devimon’s fingertips.
---
Angemon burns like someone put a star above Mount Infinity, and Yamato can barely believe that his brother, eight years old and fragile and frightened, is partnered to a Digimon that makes Devimon cower away.
Angemon calls upon the holy light, and their Digivices respond - and one by one, each of their partners glows and shrinks down to their Child forms as they give their power to Angemon.
Devimon is torn open in a single blast, and after he fades, laughing about how there are worse monsters than him over the ocean, Angemon starts dying as well.
He has time to look down at Takeru and smile. ”I’m sure we’ll meet again,” he says. ”Just so long as you wish for it.”
Then he’s gone, and all that’s left are a few feathers that flutter down to Takeru’s feet and turn into an egg. Just like the ones in the Village of Beginnings.
“It’s a Digiegg,” Tentomon says.
“Is it Angemon’s?” Takeru asks immediately.
“Angemon’s starting over as an egg,” Gabumon explains.
“That’s right,” Palmon adds. “But if he evolves right, then one day you’ll see him again.”
