[01 OOM] Castle Vamdemon
Mar. 13th, 2018 01:25 amA day after they’re all reunited, Gennai contacts them again, appearing once again as a holographic projection, suspended in a beam of rainbow light.
“I have good news and bad news, so which would you like to hear first?” He says, and Yamato rankles a little at how the old man doesn’t even try to explain why he stopped contacting them for three months.
“I’d like to say give us the bad news first, but …” Jyou starts.
“We’ll end up disappointed either way,” Yamato says. “May as well give us the good news first.”
“Well, the good news, then,” Gennai says, cheerfully. “I’ve finally located the Eighth Child.”
Everyone blinks at him, slowly, but it’s Sora who talks first. “... Eighth Child? You mean, there’s another human and Digimon pair out there?”
“Oh, yes. There were originally intended to be eight of you here,” Gennai says. “The prophecy tells us that only all eight of you together can eliminate the distortions that threaten both our worlds, after all.”
“So, where are they?” Taichi asks. “What’s their name?”
“Their name is …” Gennai pauses, brow furrowing ever so slightly. “Um. I actually don’t know. But I do know where they are! They’re located in Japan.”
Gabumon peers at the hologram. “Where’s that?”
“It’s in the world that Taichi and the others are from,” Agumon supplies.
“The bad news,” Gennai continues, “is that Vamdemon also knows everything I’ve just told you. He’s built an army and is preparing to use a gate between worlds to invade your world and kill the Eighth Child. Even now, he works on opening the gate beneath Castle Vamdemon.”
---
Castle Vamdemon is a sprawling fortress situated atop a pillar of rock, high enough to see the whole Great Lake Area.
It’s also nearly impossible to navigate. Being smuggled inside, courtesy of a few hijinks and a few ‘mons who are less than content with their treatment in Vamdemon’s army, is apparently the easy part -- navigating the strange angles and curves of the hallways, all while grappling with the castle’s odd gravity, is another thing entirely.
“The space here must be distorted and warped,” Koushiro remarks, eventually. “Like the distortion that dragged Taichi into it, or the distortions he encountered in Odaiba.”
“Maybe it’s because of Vamdemon,” Yamato says. “Maybe he, Etemon, and Devimon just cause these distortions naturally, without having to do anything.”
They’re hushed by Gomamon, who points up at an upside down walkway, where a small parade of Digimon are passing.
“They’re getting ready to leave,” Taichi says.
“Then we should follow them,” Sora adds.
“Exactly.”
---
The Digimon lead them to a stone cavern beneath the castle, with walls lined with gargoyles, a pedestal in the centre, and a massive metal door at one end. They can’t see Vamdemon clearly through the horde of Digimon, but they can hear him.
“Listen well,” Vamdemon calls. “Your target is the Eighth Child! Find him, and kill him. Envelop everything within the powers of darkness.”
Yamato cranes his neck up, trying to catch a glimpse of Vamdemon, and just about manages to see him turning towards the pedestal.
“Tlon uqbar orbius tertius!” Vamdemon chants. There’s a sound like paper or card rustling, and then the pedestal glows, emitting a pulsating blue light as it slides down into the floor.
The metal doors heave open onto a curtain of blue light, and the army starts to move.
“The gate’s open, let’s make our move,” Taichi whispers, before hollering at the top of his lungs. “Hold it!”
Vamdemon turns. “You’re finally here. It’s too late, however: Look well upon this historic moment.”
“Cut the crap,” Taichi yells back, as the Digimon jump forward.
“Agumon, evolution! Greymon.”
“Palmon, evolution! Togemon.”
“Gabumon, evolution! Garurumon.”
“Tentomon, evolution! Kabuterimon.”
“Gomamon, evolution! Ikkakumon.”
“Unfortunately, I don’t have the time to deal with all of you,” Vamdemon says, climbing into his carriage. “PicoDevimon, clean up this mess.”
“What? Er …” PicoDevimon flutters about ahead of them, as the carriage vanishes into the gate. “Guys. Guys. C’mon. Five against one isn’t fair.”
“Let’s just get rid of him already,” Takeru says, folding his arms.
PicoDevimon stares, sweeping a wing across to wipe his eyes. “Is this really what it’s come to? After all our good memories together?!”
“-- Honestly, I can’t bear to watch this.”
A white streak arcs over their heads, landing first on Kabuterimon with a resounding crash, before bouncing to Greymon, and finally to Ikkakumon. A small, cat-like Digimon lands in front of PicoDevimon, scraping her claws over the ground.
“Koushiro?” Taichi asks.
Koushiro gives a quick nod, opening his laptop.
“Tailmon.
Adult-level Vaccine-type Holy Beast Digimon.
Despite its small appearance, its strength is greatly enhanced via the incorporation of SaberLeomon data. The Holy Ring on its tail grants it great power, but if this ring is lost, it will suffer a considerable decrease in its abilities.”
Garurumon and Togemon leap forward, batting at the tiny Digimon, as she somersaults about, rebounding off each of them, avoiding their attacks by a hair’s breadth each time.
“The gate is closing!” Sora calls.
“Let’s go, then,” Taichi replies, sprinting towards the gate, as the metal doors start to heave shut.
“I won’t let you,” Tailmon snarls, the ring on her tail twinkling bright gold, before releasing a wave of yellow light.
One by one, the gargoyles start to move, spreading their wings and lifting off from their perches, landing between the children and the door.
One dives towards them, only to be grabbed by Kabuterimon and tossed back, landing between a stream of orange fire from Greymon on one side, and a stream of blue fire from Garurumon on the other. Another falls under a hail of needles and torpedoes from Togemon and Ikkakumon.
The other two bunch together in front of the gate, arms out, like football players trying to block an opposing player, as Tailmon grabs PicoDevimon and leaps towards the closing gate.
Taichi presses a hand to his chest, and the orange glow between his fingertips is Yamato’s only warning before a wave of searing heat nearly knocks him off his feet, as Greymon is engulfed in a pillar of fire.
“Greymon, super evolution! MetalGreymon.”
MetalGreymon’s chestplate opens, firing off two missiles, incinerating the remaining two gargoyles. The children start running towards the gate again, as Tailmon punts PicoDevimon into the light.
The ring around her tail starts glowing again. From higher in the cavern, two more gargoyles come to life. As one drops down towards them, it’s tackled out of their way by Kabuterimon; the second lands ahead of them just in time for Garurumon to tackle it from the side.
The children keep running, sprinting towards the gate as the space between the doors becomes narrower and narrower.
“Wizarmon!” Tailmon calls.
A shadowed shape appears next to her, some four feet tall with a pointed hat, raising a staff into the air. “Palpabut Ventus!”
A gust of wind knocks them backwards, shoving them violently away from the door. The shadowed shape turns and retreats back into the light, followed by Tailmon, as the door slams shut.
“I have good news and bad news, so which would you like to hear first?” He says, and Yamato rankles a little at how the old man doesn’t even try to explain why he stopped contacting them for three months.
