[tri OOM] Maki Eats A Doughnut And Also Is Sinister

Maki gets the call from Daigo at eight in the morning, on the first day back at school.

“Maki, we need you down at the school as soon as possible,” Daigo says, in that level but slightly too fast tone that Maki knows means ‘there’s an alarming situation that’s not entirely in my control, please come and help.’

“What’s the problem?” She asks. She knows what the problem is.

“Just … just come down here.”

---

When Maki arrives at Daigo’s office, she finds seven of the eight Chosen there, and Daigo himself looking more than a little frustrated.

They explain their decision: They’re going to return to the Digital World, but they need the Bureau’s help to do it.

“You’re serious about this, right?” Maki asks. “Even if we open the gate, it’ll be unstable. There’s no guarantee you’ll be able to come back.”

“It’s too risky!” Daigo exclaims. “Guys, you need to discuss this more first -- …”

“I’m going,” Yamato says, sharply.

“But -- …”

“What’s the point in saying that now, when we already did this in elementary school?” Jyou grins.

“Right,” Taichi adds.

“This is better than before,” Yamato says. “We know what we’re doing this time.”

Maki considers this, then gives them a swift nod. “I’ll go and prepare. Wait for me where you fought Meicoomon.”

Daigo splutters. “Himekawa-san!”

“Nishijima-san,” Maki says, coolly. “Please escort them there. I’ll have security fall back.”

She takes one of Daigo’s doughtnuts without breaking eye contact with him, then leaves without another word.

She waits until she’s outside and away from prying eyes to pause and take in what just happened.

Then, slowly, her face splits into a grin.

She returns to her office. In truth, there’s only one preparation she needs to make, but she checks the Bureau’s display of missing people as she passes anyway.

Daisuke Motomiya, Iori Hida, Miyako Inoue, and Ken Ichijouji.

Four years ago, two years after Apocalymon’s defeat and the return of Taichi Yagami and his group, Ichijouji had been corrupted by the power of the Dark Ocean and styled himself as the Digimon Kaiser, using his prodigious intellect and the power of a digivice altered by the Ocean itself to establish dominion over the Digital World.

The technology of the Dark Ocean had let him suppress the power of other Chosen. Homeostasis’ solution to that had been an interesting one, at least: Select three more children and partner them with three ancient Digimon -- the last, slumbering remnants of Digimon that had not existed in the Digital World since its inception. Digimon who could evolve in ways that had since become obsolete, that Ichijouji’s power couldn’t suppress.

One year ago, all four had gone missing while in Germany, and the Bureau had taken pains to cover that up. With the worldwide network disruptions, it had been surprisingly easy: With almost no telephone calls getting from Japan to Germany due to network outages and radio interference, the Bureau was able to simply maintain a social media presence for all four, replete with doctored photographs.

If Koushiro Izumi had ever taken a closer look, he would’ve seen through the forgeries in a second. His less-than-social nature had been a boon.

Maki had been able to retrieve something, however.

She taps in the code on the safe, 8-4-0, and opens it, taking out the two objects within: A palmtop computer that nobody had seriously used since the late nineties, and a black digivice. Ichijouji’s digivice.

Apart from its power to suppress other digivices when in Ken Ichijouji’s possession, it did have another interesting function: Irregardless of who was using it, and given a power source of sufficient magnitude, it could pry open a gate to any world. A little quirk meant to ensure that it would be able to guide people to the Dark Ocean’s shores -- but it would work just as well to open a gate to the Digital World.

She takes it. It’s the last thing she needs for this plan.
