[tri OOM] Barry, Cisco, and File Island

Yamato brings Barry and Cisco out through the same hilltop telephone booth he used to bring Autor through a few weeks back, out onto a cliff with a pretty good view of the island.

The island's central point is a mountain that looks more like a sheer spike of rock, and radiating outwards from it are a lot of very different places: Closest to the mountain, there's a pastel-coloured village of some kind that looks like it might be made of cushions; a tropical jungle with a ruined temple of black and brown stone jutting out of it; and a desert with gear markings carved into the ground and a single, leafy mountain in the centre.

Spreading out further than that, there are forests; some kind of icy tundra; a large town with a glittering white castle; a small village covered by a dark cloud; some kind of factory belching smoke into the air; and a plain covered in railroad tracks and ruined trains. Just down from the cliff, there's a lake with a camp set up next to it.

"All right, File Island," Yamato says, shutting the door. "Oldest part of the Digital World."

He was almost willing to let it go, but since Yamato insists on defending the terrible name, Cisco steps in.

"It makes him sound like a sushi pizza artist," Cisco says, shaking his head and tsking.

"Just, bad," Barry says, shaking his head and grinning.

When they come into the clearing Barry looks up at the dinosaurs, amazed. This is just like Jurassic Park. Before the storm, when things were going right and no one was being eaten.

Smiling up at the dinos, Barry nudges Yamato. "Get their attention."

Because it's Yamato's world (sort of), so he should be the one to start introductions.

"You two know nothing about naming stuff," Yamato grumbles.

He shakes his head, stepping forward to the front of the group and eyeing up the two dinosaurs.

"Hey! Down here, when you're done making doe eyes at each other," he barks up at them, voice harsh. "Which one of you has the better fire breath?"

The dinosaurs blink down at him, then slowly point at each other.

"Try again," Yamato growls.

Very slowly, the blue dinosaur stops pointing at the red one and points towards himself.

"There you go," Yamato says to the rest of the group. "Attention got, and we know who our test subject is going to be."

Barry stares at Yamato with a slightly incredulous look as he yells at the dinosaurs. Shaking his head at Yamato, Barry steps forward, looking up and putting on a smile.

"HI! I'm Barry, this is Yamato and his friends," he says in a far more friendly tone than Yamato, gesturing to himself and then everybody else. "We were hoping you could help us out with something."

Letting Barry do the talking while he continues to calibrate, Cisco chuckles only so loud as Yamato can hear and tsks.

"Rude," he says, amused.

"I got their attention, didn't I?" Yamato says to Cisco, albeit loud enough for Barry to hear. "Diplomacy isn't my strong suite."

"B-bro," the blue dinosaur says, flailing his arms a little. "Humans are so much smaller than I thought they were. I thought they were more medium sized." He pauses, and then, in a voice that sounds very much like he wants to cry: "I want to knit them tiny blankets, bro."

"Bro," says the red dinosaur. To Barry: "What's it you need, bro? Something fire related?"

"Something like that," Sora says, a little wryly.

"What about your whole 'Try not to piss people off, Cisco' thing?" Cisco taunts, imitating Yamato's voice.

Barry smiles at the dinosaurs reaction, then nods.

"Yeah, if you don't mind. My friend is going to set up an experiment, and just needs you to demonstrate your fire power."

"That was a rule for you, not for me," Yamato says, folding his arms. "Since you were in danger of getting beaten up by a bird half your height."

"Where d'you need me to breathe, bro?" The blue dinosaur says.

"... Just want to say, if we could keep the fire breath in this clearing and away from the flammable looking trees," Jyou says, "that'd be good."

"Do as I say, not as I do, hmm?" Cisco replies, still with the impersonating Yamato.

[run_barry]

"Dude, set up your test," Barry says, nudging Cisco and gesturing him to get on with it.

"It'll be just a minute," he calls to the dinosaur. "Thanks for your help, we appreciate it."

"Your impression of me is bad," Yamato mutters. "I don't sound like -- that."

"No problem, bro!" The red dinosaur chirps, while the blue dinosaur mumbles something distressed sounding about how they're so small, he can't cope.

"They're pretty chilled out, actually," Sora says, shaking her head. "I'm glad."

"I don't sound like that," Cisco continues.

Certain that he's pushing the bounds of some kind of physical retaliation, he moves off quick to get things set up, chuckling all the while.

"They are," Barry says, nodding in approval.

Nice guy dinos. Who woulda known?

"Come back here and die like a man, Ramon," Yamato growls after him, although he doesn't make any move to actually follow him.

"You do sound a little like that," Jyou mumbles, thoughtfully, before backing off as Yamato glowers at him.

Sora smiles a little. "Well, that is one nice thing about File Island. Most people here are very eager to help. I'll miss that when we get to Server."

"Oh, I am totally cool living like a coward," Cisco calls back cheerfully.

Finished setting up, he returns to the group, taking care to stand with everyone else between him and Yamato.

"Alright dude, blow it in that spot right there," he calls up to the blue dinosaur, pointing to a spot in the clearing.

"How rough does it get out there?" he asks Sora about Server; watching the setup and waiting for the test.

"Oh, I am totawwy coow wiving wike a coward," Yamato repeats back to Cisco, in an aggressively overly cutesy imitation of Cisco that still somehow comes out as a growl.

"Digimon are generally a lot more inclined towards aggression out on Server, even in towns. And the usual way of solving disputes is by fights to the death," Sora says.

"Yeeeaaah, Yamato and I were indentured servants at a restaurant on Server for a few weeks, and when we tried to leave, the manager tried to murder both of us," Jyou says, shaking his head. "But he gives us discounts now! So that turned out okay!"

"Ohhh, I'm Yamato, and I'm all growly because it's coooooool," Cisco returns.

"For real?" he replies to Jyou. That sounds awful.

No less awful, however, than the sniping back and forth going on between Yamato and Cisco, though.

Reaching up to stroke his thumb along his eyebrow, Barry asks Sora, confidingly, "Is it just me that has to deal with this, or do you get this kind of thing, too?"

He gives a nod towards Yamato and Cisco to indicate exactly what he means.

"Discounts, though," Jyou says, reasonably. "And he does make good ramen."

Silver linings to every cloud.

"Ohhh, I'm Cisco, and maybe one day my voice will break," Yamato replies, pitching his voice a little higher and a little whinier.

Sora peers at Yamato and Cisco, then lifts her shoulder in a slight shrug. "On a good day and when they're not arguing, this is basically what Yamato and Taichi are like," she says, with a quick smile. "Lately, they spend more time awkwardly avoiding each other, but that -- won't last forever, I'm sure."

The blue dinosaur, meanwhile, obligingly breathes out a stream of fire onto the spot Cisco indicated.

"You would hope so," Barry says about the awkward avoidance, joking because he's sure it won't last, either.

Probably.

"I'm Yamato and I'm going to sit on a rock being all stoic and broody," Cisco says as he starts to record data and capture information from the fire stream.

"Daaaaaaaaamn, these guys blow one hell of a barbecue," he notes, looking at the readings.

"I'm not too worried. They always figure things out eventually," Sora says, smiling. "They're just very stubborn."

"I don't brood," Yamato says to Cisco. "You brood."

Okay, Yamato's never seen Cisco brood ever, but that is besides the point probably.

He makes an irritable noise, padding over to Cisco and setting a hand on his shoulder, peering at the readings.

"Yeah, even at Adult-level, Digimon can do a lot of damage very easily, and they get exponentially more powerful and durable with each level," he says. "But luckily for us, Perfect-levels are rare -- Monzaemon's the only one on this entire island -- and there probably aren't any Ultimate-levels around anymore. So it's mostly Adults like these we need to worry about."

"You're a dye job and some makeup away from being full emo," Cisco replies.

When Yamato comes close Cisco glances over, grinning while sharing the screen.

"I can see why you'd want defense out there. You'd be a toasted marshmallow for sure."
