[tri OOM] Odaibananigans with Barry and Cisco

When Yamato opens the door to the safehouse and ushers Barry and Cisco through, it's not as busy as it usually is, but there are still a few people milling around the main room of the apartment.

Sora and Jyou are both at the kitchen table, Sora carefully working on a flower arrangement while Jyou reads through a medical textbook and scribbles notes. Nearby, on the couch, with a laptop resting on his knees, is a boy who looks almost identical to Yamato, minus a few years and with much more boyish features.

Yamato carefully shuts the door behind them. "Welcome to Chez Chosen, I guess," he says, crossing to the kitchen table to pick up his digivice and clip it to his belt.

"No thank you," Cisco says, holding up his hands palms out. "I've already had enough bear problems. 'Ishida territory' sounds pretty cool though, what's up with that?"

Taichi grimaces. "It was touch and go for a while. The Bad No-Good Chosen gave us a run for our money, and then there was Alphamon, and -- luckily Yama had a succession of crazy plans to keep us in the game, and Koushiro brought in reinforcements."

He flashes a smile at Barry. "It's a shame so many metas decide to turn to crime. Something something corrupting nature of power, I guess."


"You're going to encounter a meta-bear one day, I hope you know that," Yamato says. "And -- yeah, Ishida territory. It expires with my grandmother, we're not really needed now, but we've had a contract to be the local shizoku of that one little mountain village for a few centuries."

"Yamato is an amazing strategist," Barry replies. "Crazy sometimes, but the dude knows how to handle stuff."

Barry is very impressed and proud of Yamato.

Pulling out his phone, Barry lines up a picture of Odaiba.

"Yeah, but I know there's gotta be others out there. Based on what I've heard, my world could have a lot of heroes in the future."

"I'm going to hate you so much if that does turn into a thing," Cisco informs Yamato.

Never mind that a meta-bear could be cool.

"Wow, that's pretty sick. Your family must be badasses."

"Sometimes I think he's trying to see what the craziest plan I'll agree to is," Taichi says, a little despairingly. "Or just seeing how many people he can give spontaneous heart attacks. There were definitely moments during the war with the Emperor where our generals in the Digital World seemed like they might have acute coronaries, and I'm not completely convinced he wasn't enjoying that."

He leans over to peer at Barry's phone, giving a hum of approval at the photo.

"That'd be pretty cool. And if you're one of the first, you get to teach all the others. Induct them into the ways of heroism and all that stuff, eh?"


"It's going to be a thing," Yamato says firmly. "One day you're going to come in and be like 'bad news, guys, Bearflash is threatening the city. He has the exact same powers as Barry, but also, he's a grizzly bear.'"

He gives a quick chuckle, nudging Cisco. "I wouldn't go that far. It used to be a pretty common set-up for isolated villages."

As they reach the front of the line, Yamato makes a quick order of two pizzas (after pausing for a moment and considering ordering three), plus drinks, handing over a few notes of cash.

"Well if it gets crazier than the last thing you guys did I might be one of them worried about my ticker," Barry says.

Barry tilts the phone to better share the picture he's just snapped, then tucks it away, smiling at Taichi's suggestion.

"Yeah. I mean, I could try. Right now I'm still learning the whole thing myself."

"Pfft, like his name wouldn't be Ursaflash," Cisco scoffs.

Standing by while Yamato orders, Cisco thinks about the whole village protection gig and shakes his head.

"Common or not, I'm sure they didn't give the job to just anyone. And you guys kept the gig for hundreds of years, I've been fired from jobs in less than a week."

Taichi laughs, scraping a hand through his hair. "Even by Yama's standards, that was a pretty out there plan. I don't think Gennai even knew we could do that -- which is why it worked, he would've planned for anything else, but still."

He settles into his chair, draping one arm over the back. "I'm not sure the learning curve ever really stops. It's been seven years for me and I still feel like I'm playing catch-up sometimes."


"Ursaflash isn't bad," Yamato admits, turning to head back towards the table. "And -- I guess. It's partly just a case of family name, we were already a shizoku clan when we took the job, but I guess the village was happy enough to keep us around."

"Considering what was going on, I'm glad he was able to figure something out that worked." Although the cost of doing it still worries Barry.

Barry pulls out a chair and sits, nodding to Taichi.

"It feels like we're making everything up on the fly as we go, which is crazy, but hearing Yamato talk about the stuff you guys have faced and done, it sounds like that's just kind of how it always is." Experienced or not.

"I so want to design his suit, even if there's a good chance Ursaflash will just maul my face off," Cisco says with a grin.

"Well, now you took the whole thing from isolated village to whole dang city and a couple of worlds," Cisco points out as he follows Yamato. "Pretty awesome."

"Yeah, I don't think you ever stop making stuff up. There's an infinite number of ways for bad guys to screw things up, so you just have to adapt to stuff as it comes," Taichi says, with a faint laugh.


"Why would he need a suit? He's a bear. He's got fur," Yamato says.

Obviously, Cisco. Bears don't wear clothes, everyone knows that.

"That's one way of looking at it," he allows. As they reach the table, he pulls out a chair, settling into it and peering at Taichi and Barry. "You two getting along? Haven't killed each other with kindness yet?"

Barry turns his head when he sees Yamato and Cisco approaching and laughs.

"That's right," Barry says to Taichi, "Yamato thinks I'm as bad as you, or the other way around, and hates us both for it."

"Because he would look awesome, duh!" Cisco replies, dropping into a chair at the table.

Turning to Barry and Taichi, Cisco says, "'Sup, guys? We should be set, Yamato ordered about thirty pizzas."

"Oh, he does, does he?" Taichi asks, giving Yamato a sly smile. "I don't think Yama's in any position to complain about other people being soft, fuzzy optimists."

Yamato rolls his eyes, then reaches over to give Cisco a shove. "He's exaggerating, I bought two. Two large ones."

Barry only grins, clearly amused and enjoying this.

Cisco rocks with the shove, laughing.

"I kid!" Reaching out to shove Yamato back, Cisco notes, "He doesn't seem soft and fuzzy to me."

"See, Cisco has the right idea," Yamato says.

"Please, he's a big puppy," Taichi says. "He just wants warm hugs and to make sure everyone's well-fed and tucked in when they go to sleep."

"Have you pet his wolf ears? He goes on about them a lot," Barry asks Taichi.

Cisco looks at Taichi and Barry, then leans over towards Yamato and loud-whispers, "Dude, they're both begging you to bite them to prove your fierceness."

"He hasn't let me pet 'em yet. He's shy," Taichi says solemnly. "One day, though."

"They're both begging for a fight," Yamato mutters back to Cisco. "Biting might be involved."

Taichi makes a face. "I don't want to end up with an ear bitten off like Ryusei."

Barry laughs and finally relents in teasing Yamato.

"It's a great view out there," he says, nodding towards the city. "Taichi showed me your Academy."

"Dude, you Tyson'd somebody?" Cisco asks, shocked, but clearly in a 'that's awesome' rather than 'ew, gross' kind of way.

Craning his neck so he can look out at the city, Cisco says, "Where? I wanna see."

"It was a -- spur of the moment thing," Yamato says, ducking his head. "Since he was trying to kill me at the time."

He eases his chair towards the window a little, pointing to a square island a little ways north-east of Odaiba, with a crowded cluster of buildings on it and what looks like a runway dotted with a few planes stretching down one side.

"Over there, just off the coast of Urayasu."

"You were fighting for your life," Barry points out, giving Yamato a nod to let him know it's okay.

"When do you start?" he asks about the Academy, looking out towards it again.

"Were they able to reattach it?" Cisco asks, reaching up to rub his own ear at the thought.

Looking out to where Yamato points, Cisco scans over the city and gives a whistle.

"This place is packed. I see it, though. Looks cool, how long until you get to fly one of those?"
